Lisbon with Kids: Why It's the Most Underrated Family Destination in Europe
Pastéis de nata, tram rides, and a city that genuinely loves children. Lisbon won our hearts.
We almost skipped Lisbon. It wasn't on our original itinerary. A last-minute change of plans landed us there for four days, and it became the highlight of our entire European trip.
Why Lisbon is perfect for families
Portuguese culture is deeply family-oriented. Children are welcomed everywhere — restaurants, cafes, even late-night dinners. Nobody gives you a look when your toddler drops a fork.
The tram rides
Tram 28 is iconic but crowded. Instead, take Tram 12E through Alfama — shorter, less touristy, and Edison was absolutely transfixed by the yellow cars winding through narrow streets.
Best neighborhoods for families
Belém has wide riverside promenades, the famous pastry shop, and the Jerónimos Monastery. Príncipe Real has beautiful gardens and a Sunday organic market.
Edison's pro tip: get a pastel de nata warm from the oven at Pastéis de Belém. Edison ate three. We let him.
