Honolulu, Hawaii

The ultimate toddler beach destination

Toddler score:9/10
Best from:12m+

Honolulu was the trip that made us believe family travel could be genuinely relaxing. Waikiki's calm bays, warm water, and a culture that welcomes children everywhere — it's the gold standard for toddler beach trips.

Getting there

Direct flights from the West Coast are around 5–6 hours. We flew Hawaiian Airlines and were impressed by the crew's patience with Edison. Book a window seat for your toddler — the approach over the islands is magical and will buy you 20 minutes of wide-eyed silence.

Best beaches for toddlers

Waikiki Beach is our top pick — a long, protected stretch with calm water and a gentle sandy slope. Ala Moana Beach Park has a protected lagoon that's perfect for under-twos. Fort DeRussy Beach is less crowded and great for families. Edison loved chasing the gentle waves at sunset.

Where to stay

Request a ground-floor room or a low floor with elevator access. The Waikiki strip has the best beach access and the most family-friendly amenities. We stayed at a condo-style rental which gave us a kitchen — a game-changer for toddler meal flexibility and early morning breakfasts.

What to do

The Honolulu Zoo is right on Waikiki and perfect for a toddler morning. The Waikiki Aquarium is small but excellent — Edison was transfixed by the sea turtles. Diamond Head hike is doable with a carrier. The Dole Plantation is a fun half-day trip with a toddler-friendly train ride.

Food & dining

Honolulu has incredible food — shave ice, poke bowls, plate lunches. Leonard's Bakery for malasadas is non-negotiable. The International Market Place food hall is great for families with picky eaters. For a special dinner, Duke's on Waikiki is welcoming to families and right on the beach.

Edison's pro tip

Book a ground-floor resort room — hauling a stroller up stairs with a tired toddler is no fun. And bring reef-safe sunscreen; it's required by law and better for Edison's skin anyway.
