The world's most family-friendly megacity
Dubai surprised us completely. We expected glitz and got genuine family warmth. The infrastructure is world-class, the indoor attractions are extraordinary, and the sheer spectacle of the city — the tallest buildings, the indoor ski slope, the dancing fountains — kept Edison wide-eyed for an entire week.
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is one of the world's busiest and most family-friendly airports. Emirates flies direct from SFO to DXB in around 16 hours — long, but the service with toddlers is excellent. The airport has dedicated family lanes and exceptional facilities, making arrival and departure far less stressful than you'd expect.
Dubai's indoor attractions are genuinely world-class. The Dubai Aquarium in the Dubai Mall is spectacular. Ski Dubai (an indoor ski slope in a mall) is surreal and toddler-friendly with a snow play area. KidZania lets children role-play adult jobs in a miniature city. IMG Worlds of Adventure is one of the largest indoor theme parks on earth.
The Burj Khalifa observation deck (At the Top) is a must — Edison stood at 124 floors and said 'we're in the clouds.' Book tickets in advance. The Dubai Fountain show at the base of the Burj is free and runs every 30 minutes after sunset — Edison watched it four times. The Dubai Frame offers a unique perspective on old and new Dubai.
A desert safari is the highlight of any Dubai trip. Book a private family-friendly tour (not the party-focused ones). Dune bashing in a 4WD is thrilling — Edison screamed with delight. The Bedouin camp dinner under the stars with camel rides and falconry is magical. Go in the late afternoon to catch the golden hour light on the dunes.
Dubai's food scene is extraordinary — every cuisine on earth, executed at the highest level. The Dubai Mall food court alone has 50+ options. Tap water is safe. The metro is excellent and air-conditioned. Taxis and Careem (local Uber) are cheap and reliable. Dress modestly outside of beach/resort areas — light layers work well.
Edison's pro tip
Visit October through April — summer heat is genuinely dangerous for toddlers (45°C+). The Dubai Mall is more than a mall; it's a full day out with an aquarium, ice rink, and dinosaur skeleton.
