Temples, tuk-tuks, and the most toddler-friendly smiles on earth

Toddler score:9/10
Best from:18m+

Thailand completely won us over as a family destination. From the golden temples of Chiang Mai to the turquoise waters of the islands, every corner of this country welcomed Edison with open arms. Thai culture has a deep reverence for children, and it showed everywhere we went.

Getting there

Most flights from the US connect through Tokyo, Seoul, or Hong Kong — total travel time is 18–22 hours. It's a long haul, but Thailand rewards the effort enormously. We flew into Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport and took a domestic flight to Chiang Mai the next morning after a one-night recovery stay near the airport.

Chiang Mai with a toddler

Chiang Mai is our top recommendation for families. The Old City is compact and walkable, the pace is relaxed, and the toddler-to-smile ratio from locals is off the charts. Doi Suthep temple is a must — the cable car up the mountain is exciting and the views are stunning. The Elephant Nature Park outside the city is one of the most ethical elephant sanctuaries in Asia and an unforgettable experience for toddlers.

Islands and beaches

Koh Lanta and Koh Yao Noi are our top picks for families with toddlers — calmer, less crowded, and with gentle shallow water. Avoid Koh Phi Phi and Koh Samui's Chaweng Beach in high season — too crowded and party-focused. The Andaman Sea islands (Krabi, Koh Lanta) have the most dramatic limestone scenery. Long-tail boat rides are a toddler highlight — Edison talked about the boats for weeks.

Food with a toddler

Thai food is one of the most toddler-adaptable cuisines in the world. Pad Thai, mango sticky rice, fresh fruit smoothies, and mild fried rice are universally loved by small children. Street food is safe and delicious — look for busy stalls with high turnover. Always ask for 'mai phet' (not spicy) when ordering. Edison's obsession: mango sticky rice from any market, eaten immediately.

Practical tips

Thailand is extremely stroller-unfriendly in temples and markets — bring a good carrier. The heat is intense from March to May; November to February is the sweet spot. Tuk-tuks are fun for short rides but not safe for highway travel. Grab (the local Uber) is reliable, air-conditioned, and has car seat options in Bangkok. Thai people are extraordinarily gentle with children — you will feel welcomed everywhere.

Edison's pro tip

Chiang Mai is the perfect base for first-timers — cooler than Bangkok, walkable, and packed with toddler-friendly experiences. And always carry snacks; Thai street food is amazing but some spice levels catch toddlers off guard.
